Requirement Questions

  • Am I eligible if my teaching experience is only with students over the age of 18?

VIF teachers work exclusively in K-12 (elementary and secondary) U.S. schools, serving students aged 5-18. In order to qualify for a position with the program, you must be able to demonstrate a significant amount of recent experience with students at these age levels for which classroom teachers would be hired in the U.S.

  • Does my degree/diploma meet the minimum requirement of a U.S. bachelor's degree in education?

Applicants must have completed university-level courses and been awarded a teaching degree/diploma in education. The U.S. Department of Education has specific guidelines to determine if your degree in your home country is equivalent to a Bachelor of Education in the U.S. VIF representatives will review your application to determine your eligibility.

  • I do not yet meet the minimum application requirements, but will be qualified in the near future.

If you will meet our participation requirements in the future, we encourage you to stay connected with us via Facebook and/or Twitter and register once you have met the requirements for participation.

  • Am I eligible if my teaching experience is in a different subject than my teaching degree/diploma?

Your eligibility is determined by several factors that vary by applicant. However, if most of your teaching experience is in a subject area or age level other than that which you were trained to teach, it is not likely that you would qualify for the program.  VIF must ensure that our participants meet the official state standards for teacher licensure and certification and also confirm that each teacher's experience is in the appropriate area.  At application, we would review all of your experience and teacher training to determine if you are eligible for participation.

  • Will I be licensed to teach in the U.S.? Should I apply now?

All VIF teachers are required to obtain a teaching license for the state in which they teach. Throughout the application process, VIF will evaluate your university studies, teacher training, and teaching experience to ensure that you are eligible for the license. If you do not qualify for a license in our participating states, you will be ineligible for the program.

If you are eligible for a teaching license and successfully complete our application process, VIF will assist you in obtaining your state teaching license once you accept a teaching position. Upon arrival in the US, we will provide you with the license application and submit your completed documentation to your state's department of education. We will also manage any necessary changes to your teaching license throughout your time with VIF.

  • How will my English language fluency be evaluated?

VIF evaluates English proficiency through telephone and personal interviews which are conducted in English. VIF applicants are not required to take an English exam (such as TOEFL).
