VIF teachers seize every opportunity to share their culture to broaden our students' appreciation for cultural diversity.

David Colwell is the principal of North Charleston High School in the Charleston County Schools in South Carolina. Georgia Walters, who works closely with the school's VIF teachers, is the assistant principal. David was recognized in 2006 as a VIF Principal of the Year in South Carolina. The school has five VIF teachers.

Having VIF teachers on North Charleston High School's staff has enriched the entire school community and has proven to be beneficial for students and staff alike.

For our students, VIF teachers provide strong content knowledge and high expectations for student achievement. They involve students in diverse learning activities and ensure meaningful bell-to-bell instruction.

With the expertise of our three VIF math teachers, in the 2005-06 school year the passing rate for our Algebra I end-of-course test rose 40% from the previous year.

Our VIF teachers immediately became supportive members of the staff, sharing their cultures and participating in school as well as community activities. VIF teachers seize every opportunity to share their culture to broaden our students' appreciation for cultural diversity.

During our inaugural international food potluck, they enthusiastically shared favorite dishes from England, Jamaica and the Philippines. They also support the social development of our students by attending after school activities such as football and basketball games, concerts, awards ceremonies and other activities.
