Calling all International Educators: Have you gone above and beyond to promote global awareness in your classroom? Every year, VIF recognizes excellence in the field of global education through the International Educator of the Year awards. Award recipients are outstanding teachers who inspire students, colleagues, and community members to embrace different world views. Past International Educator of the Year winners have exposed students to the world's languages, its myriad of cultures, and the diverse perspectives of all of its people.

The contest is open to all VIF teachers and U.S. teachers participating in a VIF program such as Splash, Global Gateway, Global Connections, Passport, or Cultural Studies. All application materials must be received electronically or postmarked by midnight, March 9, 2012.

Five winners nationally will receive a $300 cash prize and educational resources for their school.

To apply, teachers must submit one letter of support, either a short video or portfolio and a brief essay.

> One letter of support: The letter must be from an administrator or supervisor. The letter of support should contain specific references to overall teaching performance and cultural contributions to the classroom, school and community.

> A short video or a portfolio: Applicants should submit either a video -or- a portfolio that demonstrates your teaching skills and integration of culture into your classroom, school and community.

Video: Your video should be no longer than three minutes in length and include images and audio that clearly demonstrate how you have integrated culture into your classroom, school, and community. View examples from past winners here and here. If submitting by post, the video should be saved on a CD or DVD that has nothing else stored on it. Ensure that you've obtained the appropriate permissions for your students to be included in the video before submitting.
Portfolio: Your portfolio should include photos and text that clearly explain how you have integrated culture into your classroom, school, and community. The portfolio should not be longer than six pages in length. The portfolio must be printed if submitting by post. Ensure that you've obtained the appropriate permissions for your students to be included in the portfolio materials before submitting.

> One brief essay: The essay must include your name and question. Single space and do not exceed 300 words. The word limit does not include the question and your name.This essay should respond to only one of the following prompts:

Prompt 1: Describe how you promote global awareness in your classroom, school, and community and its impact on participants.
Prompt 2: Why do you think it is important to integrate culture and global concepts into your teaching?

As a VIF teacher, you will earn a full-time salary in U.S. dollars. In general, VIF teachers are paid on the same salary scale as U.S. teachers, according to education and experience. The average annual salary for VIF teachers ranges between $30,000 to $50,000 USD. Your salary will be determined by your years of teaching experience and by the policies of the district and state in which you teach. In some cases, teachers may receive a higher salary for advanced degrees.

Teacher trainees must be native speakers of Spanish but fluent in English. They must have completed a Bachelor's degree in Education from a Latin American university with some experience in elementary education preferred. Teacher trainees must not be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

VIF teachers

If you are a teacher who has completed your degree or teacher training, you should apply for VIF's teacher program. Teachers in this program should be prepared to live and work in the U.S. for a minimum of two years. Please note that applying to VIF is a competitive process that can take several months to complete. Teachers accepted into the program often wait one or two years before they move to the U.S.

To begin the application process, first register online. VIF receives many inquiries from teachers, but we only have a limited number of positions to offer each year. When we are ready to consider applications from teachers in your country and in your subject area, we will invite you to complete an application. Invitations to apply will be sent via email. VIF teacher trainees (for native Spanish speakers from Latin America)

If you have recently graduated from a Latin American university with a bachelor's degree in education but do not have three years of teaching experience in a classroom, you should apply for VIF's teacher trainee program. The trainee program allows teachers to work in a US classroom for one school year and is currently open to Spanish-speaking teachers from Latin America only. Increased educational options are creating increased competition among schools. To ensure the success of language immersion programs, it is vital that schools begin student recruitment early.

Student recruitment begins with direct promotion by the school district. Promotional activities could include:

District or school brochure introducing the language immersion program.
Article or advertisement in your local newspaper
PSA on the radio or television
District website information
Information sessions events
Flyers posted libraries, preschools and daycare centers.

VIF International Education is accepting applications for its Host Family Program.

Teacher trainees come to the United States to represent their language, culture and country, to get classroom experience and to learn first-hand about U.S. culture. In addition, they provide langugage immersion classrooms with another language role model and additional support in the classroom.

Host families are integral to the success of your school's language immersion program. Your service provides a warm welcome for the teacher trainee and helps them learn U.S. culture firsthand. Complete your host family application today.

What is VIF International Education?

VIF International Education helps schools manage high-quality language immersion programs. In language immersion programs, students study core content subjects, such as language arts, math, science and social studies, in Spanish. They gain a rigorous academic experience while gaining proficiency in two languages.

Who can be a Host Family?
Host Families come from a variety of backgrounds. Host families can include:

Families with children in the immersion program
Teachers or other school staff
Community members interested in cultural exchange
Families or individuals interested in gaining exposure to another language in their home through a native speaker
Families or individuals with an empty nest or an extra bedroom

How long do Host Families typically host?
Typically, Host Families host a trainee for one full school year (ten to eleven months), but there may be opportunities to host for one semester.

How are trainees selected?
Trainees are selected based on their potential to become excellent future bilingual educators. To be selected for the Teacher Training Program, candidates must:

Have completed at least three years of a bachelor’s degree in bilingual elementary education or primary/pre-school education
Be proficient in English
Be a native Spanish speaker
Pass a criminal background check
Pass an interview
Demonstrate prior classroom teaching or tutoring experience

What are the host family’s responsibilities?
Host families must provide:

A safe, friendly and welcoming environment for the trainee
A private bedroom and access to a bathroom
All meals except for lunch on school days and/or provide groceries
Transportation to and from school (or carpool with other families, teachers)
Transportation for shopping and grocery store trips
Moral support and exposure to U.S. culture
Regular and responsive communication with VIF
Notification to VIF in the case of an emergency

What are VIF's responsibilities?
VIF is responsible for:

Host family screenings (home visit, criminal background check, etc.)
Logistical, academic and cultural support to the trainee
Trainee orientation, training, classroom observations/feedback
Logistical and general support to the host family

What are the trainees’ responsibilities?
Trainees must:

Participate actively in training and complete training program requirements
Serve as a native Spanish-speaking role model for students
Assist supervisory teacher with administrative and instructional duties on all applicable work days and teacher work days
Cover personal expenses, including school day lunches
Communicate with the host family about their schedule, etc.
Communicate with VIF if any issues arise
Serve as a cultural resource for students, teachers, school community and host family members

Is there any other way I can support the Host Family program?
Yes! You can volunteer to help provide a trainee with additional cultural enrichment opportunities (such as sightseeing, movies, meals with your family), language exposure, transportation or temporary stays if a trainee’s primary host family has to go out of town.
