Celebrate International Education Week November 17-21
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education that celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
At VIF, we believe international teachers provide U.S. students experiences that broaden their world views, empowering them to be successful in the global economy. In the spirit of the age-old adage, we encourage you to “think globally, act locally” by fostering a global mindset and incorporating international initiatives into your education objectives.
Cultural Activities for Your Classroom
Try these activities or develop you own ways to celebrate International Education Week 2008:
World Map Activity (PDF)
Make copies of the blank world map and encourage students to pick countries and create presentations to share with the class. Food, government or language are possible topics.
International School-to-School Partnership
Organize an international school-to-school partnership between your U.S. class and a class in your home country. Possible activities include a pen pal program, essay or poem share, or a collaborative project, such as an art or research assignment.
School-wide International Festival or Performance
Plan a school-wide international festival or performance for students, parents or the school community. The festival could include culture and food booths, photo and video displays, or globally themed artwork displays.
Award-winning One World Curriculum
Encourage cultural understanding using the online resource One World: Connecting Communities, Cultures, and Classrooms. This dynamic education program teaches the importance of appreciating diversity, understanding others and building strong communities.
