North Carolina Outstanding Cultural Educator
Math Teacher
Alexander Graham Middle ▪ Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, North Carolina
Did you know that division in the United States and France looks different? When Romain Bertrand’s seventh-grade math class at Alexander Graham Middle School learned the difference, students peppered him with questions about not just math but what life is like for their French peers.
Bertrand uses math as a jumping off point for discussions on the similarities and differences between the U.S. and his homeland. For instance, a lesson on converting kilometers to miles led to a comparison of speed limits in France and America.
Bertrand has incorporated cultural activities into the academic enrichment class he teaches, with activities such as “Math in the World,” which uses French and international news to spark math activities and debate. He asked to share a room with the French teacher and to participate in that class so he could reach beyond his math classes to create cultural-learning opportunities for more students.
During his free period, Bertrand often works with small groups of students to give them a chance to practice their French dialogue with a native speaker. He also started a French Club, in which students play French sports and games, watch and discuss French movies, sample French food and celebrate French holidays.
