Cultural Educator of the Year
David Dexter - Va. Cultural Educator of the Year
“Culture is both a natural and essential fit with foreign language teaching. It's intensified when teaching in an International Baccalaureate school, where culture is a cornerstone. My cultural teaching began on day one and has continued throughout my time at Godwin.”

Godwin Middle ▪ Prince William County Schools, Virginia

Students in this talented third-term VIF teacher’s classes learn not only about France and Germany, but also their teacher’s homeland, England. David Dexter’s students explore international Web sites, including those from the United Kingdom. They also participate in cultural activities hosted by Prince William County, including an annual French competition.

Dexter is married to another VIF teacher: Jacquelyn Dexter, a French and Spanish teacher at Battlefield High School, who has been named a Virginia Outstanding Cultural Educator. Active in the Godwin Middle School community, David Dexter coaches soccer and tennis and leads the Foreign Language Club. He is an advisor for new VIF teachers, and shares his love of the British, French and German cultures with the faculty as well as the students. He also reaches out to the surrounding community, participating in activities such as the Leesylvania Park clean-up and as a volunteer at the zoo.

Eileen Bell, World Languages Department Chair, Godwin Middle:

“David Dexter exemplifies ‘international’ in our school. He is an outstanding teacher who encourages not only his students but also his colleagues to learn about foreign cultures. He creates a spark in students that guides them to learn about themselves and others.”
